New Man in New York City

June 1st was probably just another Sunday for most people, but for me it was both incredibly exciting and sobering as I officially came on staff with RUF as the first campus minister at Columbia University! Brittany and I are so thrilled to be moving to NYC to share the love of Christ with these young men and women, but are also aware that there will be many challenges as we engage with students in the midst of deep brokenness.

Columbia certainly can be a difficult, anxiety-ridden environment for many people. One sophomore described the university as “…a hard place to go to school. With both the academic obligations of an Ivy League school and the pressures of a campus in the middle of New York City, it does not feel like a traditional college.” Our students are feeling the struggle of grasping for a sense of acceptance, worth, and significance in the midst of a university and city that urge you to define yourself solely based on who you know, what you’ve done, and how good you look. But the wonderful news of the gospel is that, in Jesus Christ, God accepts us fully, despite our faults and failures, and has deemed us immeasurably valuable to Him. We are defined by his sacrificial, unchanging love for us! This message is true, it is life giving, and it offers freedom and rest to weary people.

RUF is launching at Columbia this fall in order to point these young men and women to this amazing hope, and we can’t wait to get to campus to begin caring for and walking alongside these students during such formative years!
