Taste and See

It started with a simple question, “What can RUF do to care for our fellow students?” After thinking for a moment, one of our girls responded, “Everyone is really stressed right now with exams coming up- what if we gave people a free treat, like pancakes… or doughnuts!” Smiles formed, heads nodded, and our “core group” of seven agreed we should give it a shot. A week later, with a Facebook event that somehow attracted 680+ attendees (see photo collage), we walked into the Columbia Student Center with 40 Dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and were greeted by a huge throng of weary students. Those 40 dozen donuts lasted all of 40 minutes. After explaining what RUF is about and 10 minutes of semi-organized chaotic donut grabbing, we spent the last half hour meeting and chatting with a couple hundred students, most of whom had not yet heard of RUF and were likely not Christians. This event was a tremendous success, and a great way to wrap up our first year at Columbia- new students were met, involved students were encouraged, and I once again got to see the Lord moving and working on our campus through our ministry.

While we were there, I couldn’t help but be reminded of David’s words in Psalm 34:8, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him!” I’m so grateful to be able to share with you this one example of how Columbia students are tasting the sweetness of the Gospel through RUF, and it is our hope that these young men and women will begin or continue to take refuge in Jesus Christ through our engagement with them.
