One Step Further

One of the consistent bummers of campus ministry is graduating a bunch of people you really care for every single year. After three or four years of significant investment, good times, struggles, sharing, praying, they all end abruptly when the cap and gown go on.

But occasionally, we get to walk at least one step further into life with some of these students. We get to marry them.

The opportunity to spend months with a couple preparing them for a life together and then presiding over their wedding before all their families and friends, is one of the real highlights of my work. Consider: I have the best view of the bride and groom; for most of the wedding, all eyes are on me; my family gets great dinners for free; my kids are growing up learning how to dance. But in truth, the greatest benefit is being able to take one more important step with this couple, helping them begin their lives together with the firm foundation of the gospel. And then I get to watch them walk away, down the aisle, hand in hand.
