October 7, 2012 -- Breaking New Ground

Breaking new ground... Well Mary Ann is rapidly learning her way around my office. She is a big help already, and will soon take a big load off my back.

The Permanent Committee (RUF national oversight committee) meeting on Tuesday went well. We had good discussion which led to solid decisions. On Wednesday the coordinators met and spent much of our time discussing how best to fill campus positions soon to become open. Presbyteries make the hiring decisions, but we strive to recommend men who will be well-suited to each campus. Pray for coordinators and presbyteries as we work to place the right men on the right campuses.

I picked up a staff candidate Thursday morning and we headed to Jackson, Mississippi to meet Elbert McGowan. Elbert is the RUF minister for Jackson State University. Jackson State is one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). There is interest in starting RUF at Delaware State, another HBCU school, and we wanted to get Elbert's guidance as we move ahead. In my year of ministry I have worked on almost every type of school, but never on a primarily black campus. HBCU ministry is also relatively new for RUF. Elbert's ministry at Jackson State is a great success, and we hope to replicate it elsewhere.

It was a wonderful trip! Elbert was a gracious and insightful host. We attended a meeting with his leaders, met his interns, attended his large group meeting, and debriefed with him on Friday morning. Pray for us as we consider starting a ministry at Delaware State.

Tomorrow I'll be heading north to Burlington, Vermont to see John and Megan Meinen, then to Connecticut to see Lucas and Maggie Dourado. I'm looking forward to seeing some fall foliage!
