World Turned Upside Down

One of our students recently shared her testimony. “I grew up religious. I used to think doing good deeds got me closer to God. I was taught that being good was a ticket to heaven. I learned to trust my own heart and strength only. But it was hard to shake off the idea of Jesus’ existence…. I tried to forgive myself but it was impossible with my effort. At this point, I finally surrendered and asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, and I felt a load of burden lifted up, and I felt the Holy Spirit's presence. I started to read the Bible, and through scripture God revealed himself more and more. My understanding of the world was flipped, but it didn’t cause confusion—it all fell into place. I was born again and Christ opened my mind and my heart.”

In the Bible, we have the mystery of God unveiled to be good news, that God offers free forgiveness to his people through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In RUF, the way we “do” the Bible is through Friday night sermons and mid-week small group Bible studies. There, people get a chance to encounter the life-sustaining and life-changing love of God.

RUF's purpose is to reach students for Christ and equip students to serve. Our vision for the work at Brown and RISD is to promote the kingdom of Christ by preparing students for lives of faith, work, and leadership.

Several years ago, we aimed for 2-3 people baptized into the local church every year, Lord willing. Last Nov., 3 of our students were baptized into the local church. Two years ago, we had 3 full-fledged Bible studies. This Spring, we have grown to 7 Bible study small groups, one of which (our Investigating Christian Study, or ICS for short) is led by Christian students but open for any and all who want a safe place to investigate the claims of Christianity.

Two years ago, we set a goal that within 5 years' time at least 2 of our graduates would pursue a call to full-time ministry. This year, one of our graduates is applying to seminary for next Fall.
