University of Delaware – Changes Ahead!

Part of college ministry is change. We have several staff transitions occuring in the Northeast area this month. One of them is happening at University of Delaware. Here is an update from Nick Owens, the Campus Minister,  an introduction to Joey Barnet, our new Campus Staff member, and some thoughts on transition from Area Coordinator David Green!

Nick writes:

Owens_2020_05“Friends of RUF at UD, I want to share some news with you. This will be my last semester serving as the RUF Campus Minister at University of Delaware. Starting June 1, I will serve as the Associate Pastor of Outreach at Trinity Presbyterian Church in the western suburbs of Chicago. It was a very difficult decision to leave RUF. We have so loved our time in Delaware, our ministry to students, and the numerous ways we have seen the Lord work in people’s lives. But after much thought, prayer, and consultation with trusted friends and mentors we believe the Lord has led us to take the training and experience we have had reaching and equipping students for Christ and use this in the local church. I will continue ministry to students through the month of May and then the new RUF staff, Joey Barnet (see below) will take over. I will send out another email in about a month concluding and wrapping up my time serving as the RUF campus minister at UD. Please continue to pray for RUF as we minister to students this last month of the semester and for the upcoming transition and please continue to support our work through the end of May. Thanks Friends!”

Please be in prayer for Nick and his family as they tranisition to Chicago! We have been tremendously blessed by Nick and his ministry at University of Delaware, and will miss him! We are also looking forward to welcoming Joey Barnet to the University of Delware campus for this coming fall!

Joey writes:

Barnet_2020_05“Greetings! My name is Joey Barnet, and I am very excited to come to the University of Delaware to continue the work that God is doing on campus with RUF. A little bit about me: I was born and raised in Silver Spring, MD. I met my wife, Ruth, at RUF at University of Maryland. We moved to Tennessee to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the East Tennessee State University, where I am currently a PhD candidate working on my dissertation and will (Lord willing) finish by December 2020. Two great things happened to me while in Tennessee: I had a beautiful baby daughter born, and I realized a calling to ministry through leadership roles at my local church. As regards to the former, her name is Grace, and she is almost 4 months old! To the latter, I have concurrently enrolled at Reformed Theological Seminary where I have been pursuing an MDiv for the past 2 years.

I am very much looking forward to engaging college students at UD by sharing the good news of the gospel. The Lord drew me to himself while I was an undergraduate at the RUF at UMD, so both college students and RUF hold a special place in my heart. I will connect with you all in the near future.”

David writes:

David_2020_05“In June 2014, out of the blue, I got a call from a church saying they wanted to launch RUF at the University of Delaware. With unprecedented speed by August we were discussing possible candidates. Two outstanding candidates did not work out. On a whim in November I asked Nick Owens if he would be interested. By June 2015 Nick was on the job. Nick has been fantastic! In the past five years, by God’s grace, Nick has built a ministry with all the components of a healthy group. Starting with a handful of students, almost 40 participated in RUF this spring. Student leadership has swelled in numbers and quality.

When Nick told us of his new call, we began looking for someone of similar caliber to continue the ministry. Again we interviewed two outstanding men, but neither was able to come. On a whim I called Joey Barnet – and he said yes! Joey is capable of carrying on the ministry that Nick began. I am thrilled that he and Ruth will be with us and am excited to begin introducing them to Delaware.”

God is at work! Please pray for Joey and his family as they begin their ministry in Delaware.
